Students from Bell, California train at Maiquela’s Cosmetology Academy, 8511 Long Beach Blvd in South Gate — roughly three miles south along Atlantic Avenue and Firestone Boulevard. All programs are taught in Spanish. Call (323) 587-1750.
Bell is a small city with a big commercial footprint for its size, squeezed between the Los Angeles River, the 710 freeway and the rail corridor. Atlantic Avenue runs through it as the main north–south artery and carries most of the local retail.
For beauty students, Bell’s advantage is position. It sits at the centre of the Gateway Cities cluster — Cudahy, Maywood, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park and South Gate are all within a few minutes — which means a licensed professional from Bell has half a dozen local markets within a short drive rather than one.
Why Bell students study here
Bell is heavily Spanish-speaking and, like the rest of this cluster, has a substantial number of adults with real practical skill in hair and nails who have never held a licence. That gap — skill without credential — is common right across this part of the county.
A California licence changes what that skill is worth. It moves you from cash work at a kitchen table to a legal chair in a salon, with a price list, repeat clients and a business you can build on. The training is the bridge; the licence is the thing that makes it count.
Because Bell sits so centrally, students here often think regionally about work from the start — a licence earned in South Gate opens salons in Huntington Park, Downey, Maywood and Bell Gardens equally.
The Bell picture
Atlantic Avenue and Gage Avenue carry the bulk of the retail activity, and the neighbourhood salons along them are the kind of independent, owner-operated businesses where a newly licensed stylist or nail tech typically gets a first chair.
The city is bounded by the Los Angeles River to the east, with Bell Gardens on the far bank, and the 710 running alongside. Housing is dense and older, and Bell shares the 90201 ZIP code with Cudahy and Bell Gardens — a reminder of how tightly these cities are packed together.
Bell Community Center and the civic buildings on Gage anchor the middle of the city, and the residential grid around them is walkable in a way most of Los Angeles County is not.

Getting to class from Bell
The direct route is Atlantic Avenue south to Firestone Boulevard, then east to Long Beach Blvd. Roughly three miles, and typically ten to fifteen minutes outside peak traffic.
By bus, Metro runs Atlantic Avenue and Firestone Boulevard with a connection to Long Beach Blvd. Students from the western side of Bell sometimes find Gage to Long Beach Blvd more direct.
The salon market in Bell
Bell's beauty businesses are almost entirely small and owner-operated, clustered along Atlantic Avenue and Gage. That matters more than it sounds. Independent owners hire on personal impression and are far more willing than a chain to take on a newly licensed stylist, teach them the shop's way of working, and let them build a column slowly.
The trade-off is that a single shop in Bell will not fill your week on its own. The city is small and the client base is finite. Graduates who do well here treat Bell as a base rather than a boundary — the drive to Huntington Park, Cudahy, Maywood or Bell Gardens is a few minutes in any direction, and a licence carries across all of them. Building a book that spans two or three of those cities is normal, and it makes for a far more resilient income than depending on one neighbourhood.
