Textured hair is not an elective at this academy. Cutting curly and coily hair — dry cutting, curl-by-curl shaping, accounting for shrinkage — is taught as core content, because training only on straight mannequin hair produces stylists who cannot serve their own neighbourhood.

The same applies to barbering. Fading on different hair densities and curl patterns takes different technique and different repetitions, and the program is structured around getting those repetitions in before graduation rather than after.

Instruction is in Spanish. Compton has a large Spanish-speaking population, and for those students the language of instruction is the deciding factor. Bilingual students regularly study in Spanish and sit the state written examination in English — the licence is identical either way.

The city spans 90220, 90221 and 90222 and borders Lynwood, Paramount, Carson, Willowbrook and Long Beach. It has shifted over decades to a majority-Latino population alongside a substantial Black community, and both are served by the local beauty trade.

The Compton Creek corridor and the rail lines running through the city shape the street grid more than people expect — some north–south routes simply do not connect, so local knowledge of the crossings saves real time.
