Commerce is unusual: a city with a small residential population and an enormous daytime workforce. Industry, logistics and the Citadel Outlets bring tens of thousands of people into the city every day who do not live there.

For a beauty professional, that daytime population is the market. Workers on lunch breaks, retail staff at the Citadel, and the substantial casino workforce all generate demand for quick, convenient services — and the residential base is small enough that the competition is thinner than in the Gateway Cities to the south.

Serving Commerce's daytime population

Commerce has a small residential population and an enormous daytime one. Tens of thousands of people work in the city's warehouses, distribution centres, retail outlets and card rooms without living there, which inverts the usual local-business logic: the market is people on breaks, not people at home.

That shapes what sells. Fast, convenient, schedule-compatible services do well — a nail fill on a lunch break, a barber appointment between shifts. The Citadel Outlets employ a large customer-facing retail staff for whom presentation is effectively part of the job, and the casino workforce is similar. Competition is also thinner than in the dense residential cities to the south, because far fewer beauty businesses are willing to build around a daytime-only trade. For a graduate whose own schedule is irregular, that alignment is worth more than it first appears.

Serving a daytime population

Working around a warehouse or casino shift pattern is the defining constraint for many Commerce students. Shifts do not follow a standard week, and a class schedule that assumes one is useless.

The 400-hour manicurist program is often the practical answer. It is the shortest licence California issues, and nail work itself accommodates irregular hours better than any other beauty discipline — a nail table can be worked part-time in a way a full styling station cannot.

Instruction is in Spanish. Call (323) 587-1750 with your actual shift pattern and we will tell you honestly which schedule can work, rather than enrolling you into one that cannot.

The Commerce picture

The Citadel Outlets on the 5 freeway is the city’s best-known landmark, built behind the Assyrian-style wall of the old Uniroyal tyre factory. The Commerce Casino is one of the largest card rooms in the world and a major employer.

Industry dominates the land use — warehousing, distribution and manufacturing along the rail corridors and the 5 and 710 freeways. The residential neighbourhoods are compact, concentrated and heavily Latino.

Commerce touches 90040 with parts of 90022 and 90023 shared with East Los Angeles. It borders Vernon, Bell, Bell Gardens, Montebello and East LA.

Getting to class from Commerce

The 710 south to Firestone Boulevard, then west to Long Beach Blvd, is usually the quickest route at about five miles. Atlantic Avenue south is the surface-street alternative and is often better in heavy freeway traffic.

Metro bus service on Atlantic connects to the Firestone and Long Beach Blvd routes. Allow extra time in the late afternoon — freight traffic through this corridor is heavy.
