This is the question that comes before every other question, and for a lot of people the answer is better than they expect. These are the rules the State of California sets for a manicurist licence.
- You need to have completed the 10th grade. California does not require a high school diploma or a GED to sit the licensing examination — tenth-grade completion is the state education minimum.
- You need to be 17 by the time you apply for the state examination. You may start school before your seventeenth birthday, as long as you reach 17 by the point you apply to sit the manicurist examination.
- A Social Security Number is not required. California allows its professional licensing boards to accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead. Bring your ITIN and government-issued photo identification.
- Hours from another California school may count. If you started a program somewhere else and stopped, bring the documentation. Whether the hours transfer is a specific conversation rather than a general rule, so ask before you assume either way.
Two things worth being clear about. These are the *state* minimums — every school also sets its own admission policy, and some require a diploma or GED regardless of what the state asks for. - Nail anatomy and pathology
- The structure of the natural nail, growth cycles, and the disorders and diseases a technician must recognise. Knowing when not to service a client — fungal infection, inflammation, a lifted plate — protects the client and protects your licence.
- Manicures and pedicures
- Shaping, cuticle work, callus care, massage technique, and the sanitation sequence around foot spas. Pedicure sanitation is one of the most heavily regulated areas in California nail salons, and it is examined.
- Acrylic (liquid and powder) systems
- Ratio control, bead consistency, apex and structure, sculpting on forms, tip application and blending, and the fill work that keeps a set alive for months. Structure is the difference between a set that lasts three weeks and one that pops in five days.
- Gel systems
- Hard gel and soft gel, builder gel, gel polish application and safe removal, curing chemistry and lamp compatibility. Removal technique matters as much as application — most nail damage clients complain about is removal damage.
- Electric file and hand-file work
- Bit selection, safe rings-of-fire avoidance, cuticle-area control, and the hand-filing skills that have to come first. The e-file is taught after hand technique is solid, not before.
- Nail art and finishing
- Ombré, encapsulation, chrome, French variations, hand-painted detail and freehand line work. This is the portfolio material that fills a chair through Instagram in this market.
- Sanitation, disinfection and California law
- Implement disinfection, single-use rules, ventilation, MSDS, and the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology regulations specific to nail establishments.

Why 400 hours is the shortest licence California issues
California sets training hours by scope. A manicurist licence covers the hands and feet only, so the state requires 400 hours. An esthetician licence covers the skin and requires 600. Cosmetology covers hair, skin and nails and requires 1,000. The hours track the breadth of what the licence permits.
That makes the manicurist route the lowest barrier to entry in the trade — lowest hours, lowest tuition, fastest to income. Many of our students take the nail licence first, start working, and come back for cosmetology later with a salon income already behind them.
What nail technicians actually earn in Southeast LA
Nail technician pay in Los Angeles County is usually some combination of commission, per-service rate and tips, and it varies enormously by salon, by neighbourhood and by whether you can do the work clients pay a premium for. A technician who only does basic gel polish competes on price. A technician who does structured acrylic, ombré and clean freehand art does not.
The technicians we see do best are the ones who treat their first year as portfolio-building — photographing every good set, posting it, and letting the work bring the clients. That is a skill the course can start you on but only you can compound.
Nails as a business, not just a job
A nail table is the cheapest station to rent in almost any salon. That matters. It means the jump from employee to self-employed is smaller in nails than in any other beauty discipline — you are not buying a chair, a colour bar and a backwash unit, you are buying a table, a lamp and your own product.
It also means booth-rent maths is worth learning early. Know what a week of rent costs, know what a full set nets you, know how many sets a week covers the rent. Students who do that arithmetic before they graduate make better decisions about their first job.
