Whittier is the largest and most varied city in our extended service area, spanning six ZIP codes from the historic Uptown district up into the Puente Hills. It has a distinct identity — a founding Quaker history, a genuine walkable downtown, and Whittier College at its centre.

It is also the furthest of the cities we serve, and that deserves an honest framing. Ten miles across surface streets in Los Angeles County is a real commitment over a year of classes.

Getting to class from Whittier

Whittier Boulevard west to the 710, then south to Firestone Boulevard and west to Long Beach Blvd. Around ten miles and typically thirty minutes. The 605 to the 105 west is the freeway alternative.

Public transport from Whittier to South Gate involves multiple transfers and is a long trip. Nearly all our Whittier students drive, and choose schedules with fewer class days.

The Whittier salon market

Uptown Whittier is a rarity in this part of the county — a genuinely walkable historic downtown with independent restaurants, bars and boutiques. That district supports a different kind of beauty business from a strip-mall corridor: smaller, design-led salons with a booked clientele and higher price tolerance.

Away from Uptown, Whittier spans six ZIP codes and a wide range of household incomes, from the flatland neighbourhoods to the hillside districts. The practical effect is that the city contains several distinct markets, and where you work inside Whittier matters as much as working in Whittier at all. Whittier College, Rio Hondo College and the Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital campus each anchor their own client populations. For a graduate willing to commute the ten miles for training, the payoff is a home market with more range than any other city in this service area.

Being straight about a ten-mile commute

A 1,000-hour cosmetology program is several hundred trips. At ten miles each way, that is a genuine cost in fuel, time and wear — and it is the most common reason a commuting student stops attending in month five.

If Spanish-language instruction is your deciding factor and you cannot find it closer, the commute may well be worth it, and Whittier students do complete programs here. But go in with the arithmetic done rather than discovering it in the third month.

The shorter programs change that calculation substantially. The 400-hour manicurist licence is roughly a fraction of the trips of a cosmetology program, which makes it a far more realistic first step from this distance.

The Whittier picture

Uptown Whittier along Greenleaf Avenue is a rare thing in this part of the county: a walkable historic downtown with independent restaurants, bars and shops. Whittier Boulevard carries the broader commercial activity east–west.

Whittier College and Rio Hondo College both sit in the city, and Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital is a major employer. The Whittier Narrows and the hills to the north give the city a different geography from the flat Gateway Cities.

The city spans 90601 through 90606 and borders Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, La Habra Heights and unincorporated South Whittier. Household incomes vary considerably between the flatland districts and the hillside neighbourhoods.
